History

Devil's Lake State Park has a rich and fascinating history dating back to its formation. Over 1.6 billion years ago, glaciers retreated and left behind a deep, narrow gorge filled with water. Native American tribes, including the Ho-Chunk and Sioux, used the area for hunting and fishing and believed that the lake had spiritual powers. The name 'Devil's Lake' is said to have been coined by early settlers who were awed and intimidated by the lake's rugged and rocky terrain.

In the 19th century, the area around Devil's Lake became a popular destination for vacationers, and a resort was established near the lake in the 1860s. In 1911, the state of Wisconsin acquired the land, and the park was officially established in 1917. Since then, it has been a favorite destination for generations of visitors who come to explore its natural beauty and enjoy its recreational opportunities. Devil's Lake kayak

Geology

One of the most striking features of Devil's Lake State Park is its unique geology. The park is located in the Baraboo Range, a 1.6 billion-year-old mountain range that was once taller than the Rockies. Over time, erosion and glaciation have shaped the landscape, creating the stunning rock formations and deep valleys that make the park so special.

The park's most notable geological feature is the East and West Bluffs, towering sandstone formations that rise 500 feet above the lake. The East Bluff is the highest point in the park, offering spectacular views of the lake and surrounding countryside. The West Bluff is known for its sheer cliffs and challenging rock climbing routes. Other notable features include Balanced Rock, a massive boulder perched precariously on a ledge, and Devil's Doorway (pictured), a natural arch carved out of the sandstone by wind and water.  Devil's Doorway

Recreation

Devil's Lake State Park offers a range of recreational activities for visitors of all ages. The park has over 29 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The Devil's Lake Loop is the park's most popular trail, offering breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding bluffs. Other popular hikes include the West Bluff Trail, the Tumbled Rocks Trail, and the Upland Trail.

Rock climbing is another popular activity at Devil's Lake State Park. With over 1,500 climbing routes available, it's no wonder the park is known as one of the top rock climbing destinations in the Midwest. Climbers of all skill levels can find a route to challenge them, from easy top-rope climbs to more challenging multi-pitch routes.

Swimming and boating are also popular activities at Devil's Lake State Park. The lake is crystal clear and surrounded by sandy beaches, making it a great place to cool off on a hot summer day. Canoe and kayak rentals are available, and fishing is allowed in the lake (with a valid Wisconsin fishing license). Visitors can catch bass, northern pike, and panfish in the lake.  Devil's Lake Fishing with Dog
